Encoding and Recording the World

A Historical Journey Through Material Knowledge Systems

Anne-Laure Freant

Datartefacts are objects that function as documents, or systems of documents. Such objects embed, record and transmit information, and are always indicative of the cultural and political systems that created them. In this first book of the Datartefact series, we go through a historical journey from ancient artifacts (clay tokens, Inca khipus, first chronophotographs, etc.) to contemporary practices inspired by ancient material cultures and practices.
